Bernard House

Completed 2010

Set on the coast of Maine, this house was designed with huge openings along the southern exposure to capture the sun during the day. The water side is set with thoughtfully positioned windows that frame the views of the ocean and mountains. A modern twist on the traditional simple farm houses of the area, the house angles open at the entry to welcome visitors. The lines are clean and strong, with a simple palate inside of natural materials and colors. Using SIPs (structural insulated panels) and solar hot water heating, the house is very tight and energy efficient.

A modern take on the farmhouse. The strong and simple gable form is carefully indented along the Southern elevation to bring more sun into the kitchen and to create an overhang above the main entry. At the North corner, the screen porch is nested within the main volume of the house. Built with SIPs (structural insulated panels), and taking full advantage of the winter sun,  the cost to heat will be greatly reduced.

Falmouth Bathroom

Completed 2013

A complete gut renovation, the clients desired a peaceful and calm interior of natural materials that would also allow them to age-in-place.  The large format tile slopes without a curb down to the rear of the shower, allowing entry without any tripping hazards. Towel bars double as hand rails, and the wall-mounted heater also serves as a towel warmer. The custom sink, counter and backsplash are one single surface, allowing for easy cleaning.  The area beneath the sink was left open to allow for easy use if any wheelchair is ever needed.

San Francisco Interior

Completed 2011, with Macy Architecture

When the client purchased this turn-of-the-century Victorian in San Francisco, it had a small, dark kitchen and mausoleum-esque bathrooms. We sought to reconfigure the rear of the house to expand and brighten the kitchen, and designed a new powder room to remove all traces of the 1980s remodel. The upstairs was similarly updated with a more simple and period-appropriate palette of trim details, color, material and fixtures.

Revisioning Dallas Competition

2010, with Macy Architecture

This competition brief asked the participants to rethink a city block of Dallas, requesting a residential building that somehow incorporated green space and commercial space without sacrificing the quantity of living space. We proposed a design that allowed for flexibility in unit sizes and brought green space from the ground up into the upper levels of the building.  By proposing a structural grid framework, the different types of residential units could be "plugged" in, with some sections left open to allow for the pattern of a green park to emerge throughout the building.
